Home stagers, motivation is key to building your business. I’ve been self-employed for more than 3 decades (!) and I still struggle with getting stuck.
If your plant were dying, you’d think about how to nurture it back to health.
You wouldn’t blame the plant without considering its environment— how much light and water it was getting. Whether the soil needed fertilization.
Similarly, if your motivation is dying, avoid getting caught in a spiral of self-blame.
Think about how to change your own environment. Consider how to feed your creativity much as you’d fertilize soil.
When I’m in the midst of a “motivation crisis,” the last thing that will solve my immediate problem is reading inspiring quotations.
My immediate problem being that the minutes, hours, days — or weeks — are ticking by, and I’m failing to get stuff done.
Motivational Quotes a Temporary Mood Boost
“The secret to getting ahead is getting started.” (Mark Twain)
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” (Chinese Proverb)
“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” (Francis of Assisi)
Motivational quotes like these are a mood booster, but they won’t get me moving when I’ve stopped taking action. How about you?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of quotations too. I’ll even send you my absolute faves when you’re on my birthday list.
Unlike those 3 examples, the ones I send you aren’t all written by men. But that’s a whole other blog post 🙂
Home Stagers Motivation Not Found in “Pretty” Words
Notice I said quotations won’t “solve” a motivation crisis. And I’m defining motivation as “getting it done.”
Whatever your “it” is.
Motivating or inspiring quotations can help you feel better.
Or give you something to “like” on social media. Especially when they’re dressed up in a graphic like this one I created to inspire home stagers using a quote from real estate maven (and Shark), Barb Corcoran.
How To Get Unstuck and Get It Done
I’m writing this article listening to my “Tearing It Up Radio” playlist on Spotify. I procrastinated for hours this afternoon watching challenging news stories. Listening to the right music changed my mood and let me focus on getting this done today.
Another favorite technique is to change location. Bored and unmotivated? Take your laptop out to the back yard, to your balcony, or to the park.
Maybe sit in your favorite reading chair with a pad and pen instead of forcing yourself to sit at your computer. Just start writing whatever pops into your head and see where it leads.
You might discover what’s holding you back is a missing piece of knowledge on what the next steps should be in your home staging business.
Unsure how you want to decorate a room? Browse Pinterest for ideas. I recommend setting a timer or it could suck up hours and hours 🙂
Struggling to come up with a home staging business name? Try writing down all the decor-related words you can think of and then look for ones you can pair up together. Even better, do it while playing music that makes you happy.
Not sure what colors to use for your logo? Look at images of birds for inspiration.
