The first steps to starting a home staging business aren’t as complicated as you might expect.
If you’re considering a career in home staging, you could be heading towards a bright future of creativity, flexibility and financial independence.
There are 5 steps you can take now to help get you ready for when it’s time to take the plunge and follow your passion.
Today, we’ll explore the first 2 steps to starting a home staging business.
1. Confirm that you have what it takes to become a home stager.
You’ll want to find out if this is actually a field you want to pursue and whether or not you have the necessary skills and personality traits to succeed.
Do you have natural decorating talent?
Very few home stagers are trained in interior design. I don’t have that training myself, yet it hasn’t stopped me from decorating and staging many hundreds of homes going all the way back to 2002!
When I first became a home stager, I had only ever decorated my own modest homes. Yet, friends had been complementing me for years. And real estate agents were always impressed with how I prepared my own homes for sale.
This doesn’t mean I didn’t worry whether I was “talented enough” before I went to my first client.
You’ll be amazed when you get out there and see how most people live. It’s definitely not what you see in magazines, on Pinterest and Instagram, or in TV shows and movies.
If you want to see what real homes look like when I arrive to do a home staging consultation, take this Free Home Staging Quiz.
In the quiz, you’ll think up your own improvements for each room and then compare your answers to mine.
You’ll discover whether you have the eye of a home stager!
This is only one of the many free gifts I’ve created for anyone thinking of becoming a home stager. See all the FREE gifts here.
2. Start thinking of a name for your home staging business.
It’s never too early to start dreaming up a name for your future home staging business. This is usually the most fun part of your start up journey.
Though finding a name that isn’t already taken can pose a bit of a challenge. When you’ve thought of a few names you love, type then into Google and see what you find.
I’ve developed an easy way for you to brainstorm different home staging business name ideas.
You can find my method in the Home Staging Business Name Handbook. I also share tons of great names and logos to get you started.
In my next post, I’ll give you 3 more steps to growing a home staging business.
Home stagers, what do you think?
If you’re an established home stager, what were the first steps you took to get your business started that could help others?
What did you do right? What would you do differently?
We can all learn from each other so please post a comment and add to the discussion!

Debra, I agree with you and think the hardest part about starting the business is thinking of the name. Nice post!
